US President Donald Trump has warned FIFA against replacing president Gianni Infantino, calling any such move a “terrible mistake”. Infantino is facing pressure after FIFA abandoned a controversial proposal to sell a stake in the commercial arm of the men’s World Cup to private investors. UEFA strongly opposed the plan, while the AFC and Concacaf also criticised FIFA’s handling of the proposal. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s helicopter made an emergency landing in Kolaghat, Purba Medinipur, on Tuesday after bad weather affected his journey, officials said. Adhikari had taken off from Dumdum for Keshpur in Paschim Medinipur, where he was scheduled to attend a programme commemorating freedom fighter Khudiram Bose. The pilot decided to land at an open ground in Kolaghat as a precaution due to the weather conditions. After the landing, Adhikari continued his journey to Keshpur by road. Delhi Capitals batter Abishek Porel has been arrested in connection with a case filed by a medical student alleging rape, assault and criminal intimidation. Police arrested the Bengal cricketer from Emami City under the Dum Dum police station, according to Hooghly Rural police. The woman, in her complaint filed in June, alleged that Porel had a relationship with her for 3 years and had promised to marry her. She further alleged that he sexually assaulted her and confined and threatened her. The Calcutta High Court later directed police to arrest Porel. Porel has previously denied the allegations. The investigation is underway.

Police detained 110 ABVP workers in Ranchi on Tuesday as protests over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand’s recruitment examinations intensified. The protesters were marching towards the Jharkhand Assembly when clashes broke out, with some activists seen climbing onto police vehicles. The action came a day after police used water cannons and tear gas against thousands of JPSC-JSSC job aspirants during a march. Protesters are demanding cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam, a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and reforms in the recruitment process. Himachal Pradesh is facing a severe monsoon crisis, with 157 people killed and 257 reported missing between June 30 and August 9, according to the State Emergency Operations Centre. Landslides and flash floods have damaged nearly 900 properties and public works, causing losses estimated at Rs 886 crore. Around 259 roads, including the Mandi-Kullu highway, remain blocked, with Mandi the worst affected. Power supplies have also been disrupted, while 54 water supply schemes are affected. US President Donald Trump reportedly made a secret plane switch after leaving a NATO summit in Turkey last month amid a potential Iranian threat. According to US media reports, Trump boarded the old Air Force One in front of cameras before secretly being moved to a smaller C-32A military aircraft using a catering truck. Officials told CBS News that US intelligence had detected a credible Iranian threat against the aircraft, though the White House has not confirmed the report. The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution urging the Centre to abolish NEET for undergraduate medical admissions. Moved by Health Minister KG Arunraj, the resolution argued that the exam places rural, economically disadvantaged and Tamil-medium students at a disadvantage by increasing dependence on costly coaching centres. It also cited alleged paper leaks, examination irregularities and student distress as reasons for ending the system. The ruling TVK, Congress, DMK, AIADMK and other parties supported the resolution, while the lone BJP MLA walked out. Indian physicist Deepak Dhar has been named a winner of the 2026 Dirac Medal for his major contributions to statistical mechanics. Dhar, 75, shares the prestigious award with Bernard Derrida, Marc Mézard and Haim Sompolinsky. His research on the mathematical “sandpile model” has helped scientists understand unpredictable behaviour in systems such as earthquakes, avalanches and traffic jams. Dhar is an INSA Distinguished Professor at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, TIFR, in Bengaluru. A graduate of Allahabad University and IIT Kanpur, he earned his PhD from Caltech before returning to India. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2023. (PC: The Print)

BJP workers blocked roads and burned tyres in Ranchi on Tuesday as the party enforced a statewide bandh over police action against student protesters marching to the Jharkhand Assembly. Protesters were detained at several locations, while traffic was disrupted in Ranchi and parts of Ramgarh. The bandh followed Monday’s clashes, when police used water cannons, tear gas and batons to disperse job aspirants demanding reforms and an independent probe into alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC examinations.
