The Supreme Court on Monday expressed serious reservations about its January 2026 order denying bail to former JNU student leader Umar Khalid in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. The court warned against turning pre-trial detention into punishment and reiterated that “bail is the rule, jail is the exception” even under UAPA. Khalid has remained in jail since September 2020 over alleged conspiracy charges linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. (PC: India Today)
