India’s mixed 4x400m relay team won silver at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, clocking 3:14.46 in the final. The quartet of Poovamma Raju, Vishal Thennarasu, Manu TS and Vithya Ramraj finished second behind Bahrain, who claimed gold in a Games-record 3:12.87. India appeared set for bronze before Vithya delivered a strong final leg, overtaking Vietnam in the closing stages to move into second place. The result marked India’s third consecutive Asian Games medal in the mixed 4x400m relay, following gold in 2018 and silver in 2023. Vietnam finished third in 3:14.54. India’s silver added another athletics medal to the country’s overall tally at the Nagoya Games on Thursday in Japan.

Paris prosecutors have opened an investigation into racist abuse and online harassment targeting French judo champion Teddy Riner after he spoke publicly about his concerns over the rise of the far right in France. Riner said he felt “anxiety” about the country’s political direction, after which numerous racist insults and hate messages were directed at him online. The 37-year-old Olympic champion said he would continue speaking about France’s situation and stressed the importance of unity, diversity and republican values. The case comes amid heightened political debate ahead of France’s 2027 presidential election, with the National Rally featuring prominently in current political discussions. (PC: AP)

India added more medals at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on September 24. Roshibina Devi won silver in the women’s 60kg wushu event, her second straight Asian Games silver. Satnam Singh and Salman Khan also won bronze in men’s double sculls rowing. India’s medal tally reached 14 with one gold, six silver and seven bronze medals at that stage. India also advanced in several events. The men’s hockey team beat South Korea 8-2, while squash player Anahat Singh reached the quarter-finals. India’s men’s kabaddi team also secured a place in the semi-finals.

Indian wushu star Roshibina Devi won her second straight Asian Games silver medal in the women’s 60kg sanda event. She lost 0-5 in both rounds to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the final at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Roshibina replaced Divyanshi Choudhary after Divyanshi suffered a serious knee injury. Roshibina defeated Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas in the semi-final and also beat Vietnam’s world champion Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy earlier in the tournament. She had also won silver at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. Her latest medal took India’s tally to 14, including one gold, six silver and seven bronze medals. Roshibina received the Arjuna Award in 2023.  

Roshibina Devi Naorem won silver in the women’s 60kg Sanda event at the 2026 Asian Games, becoming the first Indian Wushu athlete to win medals at three consecutive editions. The 25-year-old defeated Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas 2-0 in the semifinal before losing 0-2 to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the gold-medal bout. Roshibina previously won bronze at the 2018 Jakarta Games and silver at the 2023 Hangzhou Games. Her latest medal came after she entered India’s squad as an injury replacement for Divyanshi Choudhary, who was ruled out with a partial high-grade ACL tear. Satnam Singh and Salman Khan won bronze in the men’s double sculls at the 2026 Asian Games, securing India’s maiden medal in the event. The Indian pair clocked 6:13.25 at the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course, finishing behind China’s Yi Xudi and Yide Nie, who won gold, and Uzbekistan’s Pavel Sorin and Mekhrojbek Mamatkulov, who took silver. Satnam and Salman remained second at the 500m, 1,000m and 1,500m marks before slipping to third in the final 500m. The duo had reached the medal race after finishing second in their heat. India will have several medal opportunities at the Asian Games on Thursday, September 24, with Roshibina Devi leading the country’s challenge in wushu. She will face China’s Xiaoyu Zhang in the women’s 60kg sanda final at 6:10 am IST.   Indian rowers will also compete in several finals, while shooting features 10m air pistol and mixed-team skeet events. Athletics will begin with Indian athletes competing in the heptathlon, triple jump, 100m and 10,000m. Mirabai Chanu finally won her maiden Asian Games medal, taking silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games. The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist totalled 198kg, finishing behind North Korea’s Ri Song Gum, who won gold with 215kg. Chanu’s silver ended India’s 28-year wait for an Asian Games weightlifting medal, since Karnam Malleswari’s silver in 1998. The medal also completed a major gap in Chanu’s decorated career, which includes Olympic silver, a world championship gold and multiple Commonwealth titles. She had missed the podium at the 2014 and 2023 Asian Games and missed the 2018 edition through injury. Chanu had pursued an Asian Games medal for 12 years.

Roshibina Devi advanced to the women’s 60kg Sanda final at the 2026 Asian Games after defeating Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas on points over two rounds in the semifinal at Aichi Budokan, Nagoya, on September 23. The 25-year-old has now become the first Indian Wushu athlete to reach the Asian Games final twice. She previously contested the gold-medal bout at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, where she lost to China’s Wu Xiaowei. Roshibina now has another opportunity to fight for gold and potentially become the first Indian to win an Asian Games gold medal in Wushu. India’s men’s badminton team won the bronze medal at the Asian Games 2026 after losing 3-1 to China in the semi-final on Wednesday. Lakshya Sen lost the opening singles tie to China’s Shi Yu Qi. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then levelled the contest by beating Wang Chang and Liang Weikeng in the doubles. However, Ayush Shetty lost to Li Shi Feng 21-19, 21-13, putting India behind again. Hariharan Amsakarunan and Arjun Madathil fought hard against Ji Ting He and Yi Liu but lost 16-21, 21-17, 9-21. The defeat ended India’s campaign with a bronze medal in the men’s team event. (PC: X)
