Brief by Shorts91 Newsdesk / 09:21am on 15 Jan 2024,Monday Weather & Environment

The volcano that erupted near the Icelandic fishing village of Grindavik on Sunday, has now started sending lava flowing into the town engulfing at least three homes. Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdittir described a "very serious situation" after the buildings went up in flames. Professor Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson of the University of Iceland explained that the eruption is "somewhat bigger" than earlier events in the series of eruptions in the southwest peninsula over the last three years, which were "quite benign and located far from roads and infrastructure." Prof Gudmundsson said there has been "unrest and volcanism" in the area "for years," but the defences built near Grindavik in December would likely not be "big enough" if the eruption continues long and grows larger.

The eruption, which commenced north of the town of Grindavik, prompted an overnight evacuation. This raises critical questions regarding the stability of the region and the effectiveness of existing preventive measures.
