A Jeddah-bound Malaysia Airlines flight with 186 passengers was diverted to Chennai on Monday after an engine problem was detected during the flight. Flight MH156 was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah when an issue developed in its No. 2 engine. The pilot contacted Chennai air traffic control and requested an emergency landing. Airport officials declared a full emergency and deployed fire tenders, ambulances and CISF personnel. The aircraft landed safely and all passengers were evacuated. Their baggage was also removed. No injuries were reported. Airline and technical teams are investigating the problem. Airport operations continued normally after the incident. (PC: Reuters)  

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced new rules for this year’s Durga Puja celebrations. All liquor shops and bars across the state will remain closed on Maha Ashtami. DJ music will also be banned during Puja celebrations and immersion processions. Adhikari said the measures aim to keep the festivities peaceful. He also asked Puja committees to choose their themes carefully. He said idols, pandals and themes should not hurt religious sentiments or disrespect Sanatan traditions. However, theme-based pandals will still be allowed. The announcement was made during a coordination meeting with Durga Puja committees in Kolkata on Monday.  

The 72nd National Film Awards are likely to be held in Gujarat this year. The ceremony may take place in Ekta Nagar, near the Statue of Unity. This would be the first time the prestigious awards ceremony is held outside New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu is expected to present the awards during her Gujarat visit later this month. The awards were announced in July. 'Article 370' won Best Feature Film, while Yami Gautam was named Best Actress. Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan shared the Best Actor award. The move marks a major change from the ceremony’s long-held tradition in the national capital.  

The Indian government has rejected speculation that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) could be privatised or lose its importance. ISRO will remain central to advanced space research, strategic missions, exploration and the development of new technologies. The government said growing private-sector participation is intended to expand India’s overall space ecosystem, not reduce ISRO’s role. Under the reforms, private companies and public-sector firms can increasingly scale mature technologies and routinely manufactured systems, while ISRO focuses on frontier research, human spaceflight, next-generation launch systems and deep-space missions. The agency said the goal is an ISRO-led national space ecosystem.

The National Film Awards will break from a decades-old tradition this year, with the 72nd ceremony set to move out of New Delhi for the first time. A Delhi court on Monday sent self-styled right-wing influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj to 14-day judicial custody in an alleged assault case linked to a June protest at Jantar Mantar. Bhardwaj was accused of beating and injuring Sanjay Kumar, the father of a teenage student activist, during a protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party. He was detained in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday after protesters demanded his arrest. Police later added provisions of the SC/ST Act and criminal intimidation to the FIR. Bhardwaj had claimed he acted in self-defence after allegedly saying he had “cracked the skull” of Kumar. (PC: X)

The owner of the five-storey PG building that collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, killing seven people and injuring five, has been detained from Bhiwadi near Gurugram. Hariram Gupta was traced after Delhi Police issued a lookout circular and launched a manhunt. Several police teams conducted raids at suspected locations as authorities searched for him. The building, which housed a boys’ PG called Hostel Daze, collapsed on Sunday while repair work was underway. Rescue teams from multiple agencies are continuing operations at the site. The exact cause of the collapse remains under investigation, while the MCD has ordered action against illegal constructions. (PC: India Today)

6 people have died after a five-storey boys’ PG building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, with a lookout circular issued against owner Hariram Bansal. The building, near Delhi University’s South Campus and opposite Sri Venkateswara College, collapsed around 1:30 pm while repair work was reportedly underway in the basement. Ten people were rescued and taken to hospital. Rescue teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Police continued operations overnight. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered a magisterial inquiry, while police registered an FIR against the owner. The Delhi High Court will hear a PIL concerning the collapse.  

Indian benchmark indices opened lower on September 7 as rising US-Iran tensions and higher crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. The Nifty declined 0.2% at the open to 23,883.15, while the Sensex fell 0.2% to 76,446.05. All sectoral indices traded lower in early trade. The rupee opened at 94.39 against the US dollar, compared with Friday’s close of 94.49. Crude oil traded near $97 per barrel as geopolitical tensions supported prices. Analysts expected domestic markets to remain weak or rangebound through the week, citing West Asia tensions, elevated oil prices, rainfall deficit, foreign portfolio investor selling and liquidity pressure from upcoming IPOs, including NSE and Jio and other new issues. A five-storey building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan collapsed on Sunday afternoon, killing three people and leaving several others feared trapped under the debris. Known as ‘Hostel Daze’, the building housed students as paying guests, many studying at Delhi University’s South Campus. Rescue teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Service, police and other agencies continued search operations. Local resident Rajen Chhetri told PTI that basement construction was underway when the collapse occurred, with water accumulating inside. He also claimed the building’s foundation was “extremely weak”. According to Chhetri, many residents were from Kerala, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, studying at nearby colleges and paying around Rs 12,000 per bed for accommodation.
