The University of Cambridge has unveiled a portrait of late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, drawing praise from academics including former Chief Economic Adviser Kaushik Basu. Basu said Singh was one of the world’s most respected leaders and stood out for his rare combination of intellect, modesty and integrity, which gave India a special place on the world stage. Cambridge rarely unveils portraits of its alumni, making the tribute an acknowledgment of Singh’s intellectual stature. Singh studied Economics at Cambridge, earning a First Class Honours degree in 1957 and later completing a DPhil at Oxford in 1962. Madhuri, also known as Mahadevi, the elephant, returned to the Nandani Jain math in Kolhapur more than a year after being moved to Vantara, an animal rescue centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. She was brought back to the math at 2am on Saturday, prompting hundreds of locals to gather and welcome her with flowers, celebrations and tears. Madhuri had been moved to Vantara on July 28, 2025, following instructions from a High-Powered Committee (HPC), whose decision was upheld by the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court. The transfer followed protests and a prolonged legal battle over her living arrangements. After inspecting the facility where Madhuri was housed, the HPC cleared her return to Kolhapur on September 9, 2026.

Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson criticised Vladimir Putin after a Russian drone targeted a railway line he was travelling on in Ukraine. Johnson was alerted at 5am on Sunday while returning from a security conference in Kyiv, after another passenger train behind his was evacuated near Yagodyn, close to the Polish border. Johnson said he did not know what “warped logic” drove Putin to target a stationary Ukrainian locomotive. The route was frequently used by foreign delegations returning from Kyiv, but Johnson was neither evacuated nor delayed. Ukraine’s railway operator said the drone may have been targeting a diplomatic train that departed earlier after schedules were adjusted due to Russian strikes. A train near Volyn was also hit, with no injuries reported.

Oil prices jumped more than 2% on Monday after fresh Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia and Iranian attacks on ships intensified supply concerns. Brent crude futures rose $2.90, or 2.77%, to $107.51 a barrel, while WTI gained $2.27, or 2.27%, to $102.32. A vessel in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by a projectile, causing a fire and forcing its crew to evacuate, while Iran said one person was killed and four crew wounded aboard a commercial vessel. Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline, which helps reroute exports around Hormuz, was shut after a drone strike. India’s women’s cricket team refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council chairman Mohsin Naqvi after defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs to win a record-extending eighth title. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday announced that a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be implemented in all NDA-ruled states before the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. Addressing the media in Mumbai, Shah said some states have already introduced a UCC and reiterated the government’s resolve to enforce it across 21 BJP-led NDA states before the elections. He also said discussions with stakeholders were still underway on preparing the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Shah highlighted the government’s abolition of triple talaq, saying it was aimed at ensuring equal rights for Muslim women. He also cited the removal of Article 370, saying it was done without bloodshed or firing a bullet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held 15 formal bilateral meetings with world leaders over three days around the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs said. His engagements included meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Modi and Xi discussed trade, supply chains and border stability, while talks with Putin focused on defence, energy and critical minerals. India’s women’s cricket team refused to accept the Women’s Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi after defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final in Dubai. India coach Amol Muzumdar said the decision was in line with the BCCI’s position. “India are officially the (Asia Cup) champions. Trophy or no trophy doesn't matter to us. This is BCCI's stand (to not take the trophy from Naqvi),” Muzumdar said. The Indian players stayed inside the dressing room during the presentation.
