India’s only active volcano, located on Barren Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has erupted twice within eight days, officials confirmed. The eruptions took place on September 13 and September 20 but were minor. Barren Island lies about 140 km from Port Blair and remains uninhabited due to its harsh conditions. The volcano sits at the boundary of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. Its first recorded eruption occurred in 1787, with later eruptions in 1991, 2005, 2017, and 2022. Some goats, rodents, and pigeons survive on the island, likely due to freshwater springs.
